Title
photo of Northwest NY CORE chairman Marie Witherspoon and Coretta Scott King
Description
This is a photo of Northwest New York CORE chairman Marie Witherspoon (Black woman, left) protesting with Coretta Scott King (right), the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King. She is also the mother of chapter member Fatima Cortez Todd. They are shown here picketing at the United Nations.
Besides being active in the Women's Strike for Peace, Witherspoon was also involved in the New York City Commission on Human Rights and its ‘testing for housing discrimination’. According to her daughter, ‘the apartment that we moved into… was through the courts because they had tried to discriminate and we won’.
As chapter chairman, Witherspoon led fund raising efforts to support the Louisiana and Mississippi volunteers, was involved in the March on Washington and CORE’s boycott of Schaefer Beer and Greyhound Bus.
