photo of Yuri Kochiyama, 7 Arts CORE
Description
This is a photo of Yuri Kochiyama, 7 Arts CORE, perhaps the most widely recognized and respected Asian American activist in the history of the United States.
Her activism started as a member of CORE at Brooklyn CORE’s demonstrations at SUNY Downstate Medical. She went on to work with several Black, Latino and Asian American social protest groups and revolutionary organizations, from the Black Panthers to the Young Lords to Asian Americans for Action.
As a member of Malcolm X’s Organization of Afro-American Unity, she was at the Audubon Ballroom with her teenaged son Billy when Malcolm X was assassinated. She was also the only Asian to be made a member of the Republic of New Africa, a revolutionary Black nationalist group that included former CORE members Herman Ferguson and Arthur Harris of South Jamaica CORE and Sonny Carson and Ali Lamont of Brooklyn CORE.
