photo of Bronx CORE White Castle demonstration (4)
Description
This is a July 9,1963 photo of Bronx CORE's White Castle demonstration. Inside the restaurant are White counter protesters clearly holding the Confederate flag. Also known as a 'rebel flag', it was the flag of southern secessionists during the Civil War which resulted in the end of slavery. Like the Nazi's use of the swastika symbol, it is often used as a white supremacist symbol.
Bronx CORE's White Castle demonstration was accompanied by armed violence from such groups as the American Nazi Party.
