Title A name given to the resource photos of and articles on The EAST Subject The topic of the resource Brooklyn CORE members Description An account of the resource This is a collection of photos of and articles on the EAST, the cultural nationalist organization founded by Jitu Weusi (among others). I am including it here for several reasons: <br />- as I have argued previously, the EAST in many ways represents a natural evolution of ideas that started in Brooklyn CORE<br /> - several members of Brooklyn CORE were also members of the EAST and the EAST had a close working relationship with the Dr. Sam Pinn of Brooklyn CORE in the 1970's and 1980's. Brooklyn CORE's Sonny Carson is included in the mural (bottom right) on the building's front. <br />- there has been precious little scholarship done on the EAST. Having all these items in one place encourages scholarship by making it easier for students. <br />* The place to start is still Dr. Kwasi Konadu's book 'A View from the EAST'<br /><br /> Included here (besides the photos of the former EAST headquarters at 10 Claver Place in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn) are:<br /><br /> - a copy of Black News*, a newspaper published regularly by the EAST similar to the Black Panther's newspaper. This copy is significant because it lists Msemaji Weusi (aka (Maurice Fredricks of Brooklyn CORE) as part of the editorial board. It also includes an interesting article on Jitu Weusi and COINTELPRO. (taken from freedomarchives.org) <br /><br />- a hard to find article* on the EAST's jazz nightclub that includes photos taken by Basir Mchawi, a leader of the EAST who also used to hang around the Harlem CORE offices as a teenager in the mid 1960's. (from Wax Poetics magazine) <br /><br />- a journal article on writings by Black prisoners during the 1970's that focuses on the work of Jitu Weusi and Jim Seitu Dyson (also of Brooklyn CORE). This is the only piece I have come across that discusses Seitu's work from a scholarly perspective. Shout out to Dr. Maisha Winn for being down by law.<br /><br /> - this is a link to a conference paper done by Dr. Russell Rickford on the Uhuru Sasa Shule, the school at the center of the EAST ('Uhuru Sasa' is Swahili for "Freedom Now'). The piece is interesting for its praise and damning criticism. Rickford's dissertation was on the Afrocentric independent Black school movement of the 1970's and 1980's. Title A name given to the resource Obituary for Brooklyn CORE chairman Congressman Major Owens Subject The topic of the resource Brooklyn CORE members Description An account of the resource This is the photo used for the New York Times obituary of Brooklyn CORE chairman Major Owens who died on October 21, 2013. The photo is notable because in it he is speaking at an NAACP event. The fact that Congressman Major Owens was ever a member of CORE or that his political career started in CORE was not mentioned in either the New York Times obituary or the Washington Post's (included below). It was not even mentioned in the New York Daily News or the New York Post coverage of his passing. None of these papers even mentioned that Major Owens was at one time an activist. Major Owens was a revolutionary. Major Owens was in the streets. As the head of Brooklyn CORE's Rent Strike Committee (a group that included former first deputy mayor Stan Brezenoff), Owens was one of the most successful practitioners of non-violent direct action in New York City. In fact, it was the members of Brooklyn CORE who first suggested and insisted that he run for political office as a city councilman in 1965. Also not mentioned in any of the coverage was the fact he died within a day of another Brooklyn CORE comrade, Jerome Bibuld, whose family set off CORE's more than decade long struggle against the NYC Board of Education with the chapter's 1962 sit-in at the BOE's office in Brooklyn. As of the date of this posting there has been no obituary for Jerome Bibuld written in any of the major New York City newspapers. Title A name given to the resource photo of UFT President Al Shanker with Bayard Rustin Description An account of the resource This is a photo of Al Shanker (White, glasses, coat and tie, center bottom, hand raised) with Bayard Rustin (Black, center bottom). The photo speaks to not just his role as the president of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) but the fact that Shanker had a history with CORE, despite his role in the Ocean Hill-Brownsville controversy, his racist actions during the 1968 teachers' strikes and his public feuds with several CORE chapters, most especially Brooklyn CORE, Harlem CORE and Queens CORE. According to the UFT's website and his biographer, Richard D. Kahlenberg, Shanker was once a member of CORE. He was a member of his college chapter at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Shanker was also personally involved in CORE's Woolworth's protests and CORE's efforts during the Mississippi Freedom Summer and its predecessor, Queens College CORE's Student Help Project especially in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He also worked with former CORE members Velma Hill, Alan Gartner, Connie Banks and Hamilton Banks to bring para-professionals into the UFT. While Gartner described Shanker's actions during the 1968 teacher's strikes as 'fucking racist', he and Hill acknowledged that Shanker also sought to increase the number of Blacks and Latinos in the UFT which at the time was overwhelmingly White and Jewish. In the photo, she is a law student at Columbia University in the late 1960's. An Erasmus High School student when he helped found the student chapter of Brooklyn CORE, she was involved with Brooklyn CORE’s campaign against Ebinger’s Bakery and attended the March on Washington. As a student at Columbia University’s Law School, she was a spokesman for the SDS group during the student rebellion at Columbia University in 1968. She was among the SDS members that broke away to form the Weathermen which became the Weather Underground. She married twice and changed her name to Eleanor Raskin and Eleanor Jones. She changed her name several other times when she lived in the run under assumed aliases to avoid arrest for her membership in the Weatherman.
