According to Cumberbatch, he joined when he was 16 years old and was arrested during his first demonstration at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He has stated he is also the son of a Garveyite. He was one of the CORE Freedom Walkers who walked from Brooklyn to the March on Washington and sat on the platform during the event. Title A name given to the resource photo of Stanley Brezenoff, Brooklyn CORE, as Deputy Mayor Subject The topic of the resource Brooklyn CORE members Description An account of the resource This is a 1984 photo of Brooklyn CORE member Stanley Brezenoff as deputy mayor of New York City. According to Brezenoff, after he left Brooklyn CORE (BK CORE), he had a hard time finding a job. ‘ No one would hire me… I had been arrested so many times.’ * He couldn’t even get a taxicab license because of interference from NYPD. After someone in Congressman Adam Clayton Powell’s office made a phone call on his behalf, he got a job in the Parks Department. He got even luckier when Frank Espada, who was in charge of setting up the community corporations and anti-poverty programs during Mayor Lindsay's administration, came to find Brezenoff to hire him. Espada had once been part of a East New York Action, one of the groups Brezenoff and BK CORE trained and taught how to do rent strikes. He became an acting administrator for the community corporation part of the Community Development Agency within the Human Resources Agency. He then worked for the Ford Foundation during the Ocean Hill-Brownsville controversy and was a program adviser for the NY Urban Coalition. He then began to work his way up the ladder of the Koch administration. In 1978, he was the commissioner for the Department of Employment during which time Rev. Al Sharpton held a Brooklyn CORE type sit-in at his office. After serving as Human Resources Administrator, Mayor Koch made him the head of NYC’s Health and Hospital Corporation. In 1984 he was made a deputy mayor and eventually the first deputy mayor. Ironically, it was his job was to supervise the day to day operations of the city’s municipal agencies including the police department. Whenever Koch was incapacitated by illness or out of the city for an extended period of time, Brezenoff was the acting mayor. A member of Brooklyn CORE, once considered the most militant civil rights group in a city that saw its members as borderline terrorists, was the de facto leader of New York City. The New York Times referred to him as ‘Mayor’ Brezenoff. When Mayor Dinkins succeeded Koch, he made Brezenoff the executive director of Port Authority. As such, he was in charge of the World Trade Center and on site during its first bombing in 1993. The New York Times quoted Mayor Dinkins as praising Brezenoff for his efforts. Originally from Brooklyn, Brezenoff was working on a Master’s degree in Philosophy before he joined CORE. According to Mr. Brezenoff, he first joined as part of the 1963 White Castle demonstrations in the Bronx. He was soon directed to his local chapter, Brooklyn CORE. He became part of a clique of active members that included Vivian Casey, Arnie Goldwag, Vinny Young and Gil Banks. A veteran of such demonstrations as the SUNY Downstate Medical Center campaign and the Stall In, he was also front and center for the riots in Bedford Stuyvesant that took place after the Harlem riots in 1964. He worked directly under Brooklyn chairman Major Owens on the rent strike committee and also served as housing chairman. On loan from Brooklyn CORE, he was Milton Galamison’s Chief of Operations during the second citywide school boycott. Referred to in the press as ‘Galamison’s White henchman’, he believes he may have also been the last White leader in the chapter. Brooklyn CORE chairman Sonny Carson, even after he had pushed out White members like Arnie Goldwag (whose name was synonymous with Brooklyn CORE), seemed to have accepted Brezenoff. He would not be allowed to be a head of committee, but according to Brezenoff, he was told by Sonny Carson that he was welcome to stay. Brenzenoff stayed for awhile but left not too long afterwards. Brooklyn CORE initiated this demonstration as part of a city wide CORE campaign protesting the lack of Blacks and Latinos in the construction industry. Bramletter was arrested as part of a group trying to block a cement truck from entering the construction site. Title A name given to the resource photo of school protest by Bibuld family, Brooklyn CORE Description An account of the resource This is a photo of the Bibuld family who were at the center of Brooklyn CORE's first campaign against the NYC Board of Education. In between Elaine and Jerome Bibuld are their children (from left to right) Melanie, Carrington, and Douglass. Jerome Bibuld who was Jewish, grew up in poverty and spent time in an orphanage. He attended Communist meetings early on and was a member of a Communist influenced group before coming into Brooklyn CORE. * Elaine came from a family in Virginia that physically fought back against Whites and lived in a self sufficient Black town. She had previously worked on the campaign for Benjamin Davis, the first Black member of the Communist Party to become a city councilman. * Douglas went on the Stuyvesant High School which was considered the most prestigious public high school in the city. He was also involved in the African American Students Association (AASA). After graduating from Antioch College, he attended Baylor College of Medicine and did his internship at Harlem Hospital. Dr. Bibuld practices internal medicine. All three children were involved in the Uhuru Sasa after school program, and like Douglas, Melanie was a member of the AASA. She became more heavily involved in the EAST as a teenager. She changed her name to Imani (swahili for faith, belief). She is now known as Rev. Imani Roby and is currently a member of the Shrine of The Black Madonna in Detroit, a pan-African Orthodox Christian church founded by Rev. Albert Cleague in the late 1960's. Her husband is the leader of the church's security force, the Macabees. She is also a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and founder of the Dr. Albert B. Cleage, Sr. Memorial Health Center, a free health clinic.
