The photo was taken at CORE' national convention that July in Columbus, Ohio. Young's presence there was notable because it was the first time Young as head of the most conservative of the national civil rights organizations came out and vocally supported the concept of Black Power. A year earlier Arthur Harris of South Jamaica CORE and Herman Ferguson, the education chairman of South Jamaica CORE were arrested for plotting to assassinate both Young and Roy Wilkins. Ferguson was supported during his trials by several CORE leaders at the time, including: Ali Lamont, Sonny Carson, Jitu Weusi, Maurice and Winnie Fredricks of Brooklyn CORE; Gular Glover and Hamilton Banks of Queens CORE. The conspiracy turned out to be part of the FBI's Counter-intelligence program's (COINTELPRO) attempts to discredit Black leaders and prevent the coalition of Black nationalist groups. Jerome Jackson of Harlem CORE in discussing how he had been assigned to act as security for Young during the convention noted how everyone else, including Roy Wilkins, had brought their own security, except for Young who showed up with just his secretary. Because of this, Jackson commented on how Young was 'the bravest' man he knew. The fact that he was on the cover speaks to his national prominence, influence and significance as a leader in the Black liberation movement here in the United States. It also in many ways signaled the beginning of the end for him as a nationally respected Black leader. The article that accompanies it details his dealings with Uganda's president, Idi Amin, and Innis' attempts to forge international alliances. His trying to cast himself as a descendant of Marcus Garvey's political philosophy only backfired on him as his forays into dealings on the African continent led to him being branded an agent for the Central Intelligence Agency by several African, African American leaders and American journalists. It is included here because it demonstrates: 1. That CORE was headquartered in New York City and had an office in Harlem as early as 1947. CORE moved to NYC because its first national leader, George Houser, moved here in 1946. 2. Bayard Rustin was an early staff member of CORE. 3. There were Asian activists in CORE and in the civil rights movement. A 'Shirley Kajikawa' is listed as a member of the Executive Commitee. A woman named Ina Sugihara, who was a survivor of the Japanese internment camps here in the United States, was also a member of New York CORE at this time. 4. CORE had a history of having women leaders at the national level. Almost Half of the national officers listed alongside George Houser and Bayard Rustin are women. A graduate of Washington University, he entered college about the same time he came into CORE at 16 years old. He was also a founder of St. Louis CORE and participated in the Route 40 Freedom Rides. He had previously worked as a trade union organizer and administrator both locally and nationally. In the Army he served as a script chief for the country’s only psychological warfare section. In an interview, he stated his job was essentially to come up with ways to convince people not to fight. A Jewish immigrant whose family just escaped the Holocaust, Schwarszchild also served in the U.S. Army's Counter Intelligence Corps during World War II. Besides being arrested at CORE's demonstration at the 1964 World's Fair, he was also protected by the members of Harlem CORE in their office during the 2964 Harlem riots. As the executive director of the Lawyers' Constitutional Defense Committee, he played a pivotal role in convincing hundreds of civil rights lawyers to volunteer their services to the movement in the South during 1964.
