Title A name given to the resource FBI 'Missing' Poster for CORE members Schwerner, Chaney, Goodman Description An account of the resource This is a missing poster for CORE members Schwerner, Chaney, Goodman issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). They were the three field workers murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi, by the Ku Klux Klan because of their civil rights work. Missing since June 21, 1964, it was not until the FBI offered a $25,000 reward for information that there was a break in the case. The bodies of the CORE workers were found on Aug. 4th, 1964. Goodman and Scwherner were each shot once through the chest. Chaney was severely beaten and shot three times. Title A name given to the resource photo of Bronx CORE chairman Herb Callender Subject The topic of the resource Bronx CORE members Description An account of the resource This is a 1964 photo of Bronx CORE chairman Herb Callender. A union leader in a Ford auto plant, he was one of the original 1961 Freedom Riders. The case that resulted from his particpation, Herbert E. Callender v. Florida, went all the way to the Supreme Court. He was successfully defended by CORE attorneys Carl Rachlin and Floyd McKissick. He is recognized as the leader who put Bronx CORE on the map with the 1963 White Castle demonstrations, a campaign that exposed the existence of southern style violence and neo-nazi members in NYC. Along with Malcolm X and rent strike leader Jesse Gray, he was denounced in the press by Police Commissioner Murphy. It later came out that Callender had been targeted by the Bureau of Special Services (BOSS/NYPD) who had planted an undercover police agent, Ray Wood, in his chapter. After placing the Mayor Wagner of New York City under citizen's arrest with Wood, Callender was briefly sentenced to Bellevue for mental observation. Unperturbed, he became one of the three leaders of the 1964 Stall In campaign. He eventually became a field secretary and then the national organization director for CORE, the third highest ranking position at the time. He left just before Roy Innis became the national director but was part of the unsuccessful effort in the mid-1970's along with James Farmer to take CORE back from Innis. In between he received a degree from Cornell University. Callender later changed his name to Makaza Kumanyika which according to his son means "a cold wind blows for Black people." Originally from South Carolina, Brunson was working as an auto mechanic before he quit to work full time for CORE. Because of his southern ways and manner of speech, he was considered ‘country’ by many members, meaning slow and not very bright. The fact that Brunson was looked down on because of this is suggested by Dr. Brian Purnell’s dissertation on Brooklyn CORE as well as interviews with Brooklyn CORE members. A Jewish immigrant whose family just escaped the Holocaust, Schwarszchild also served in the U.S. Army's Counter Intelligence Corps during World War II. Besides being arrested at CORE's demonstration at the 1964 World's Fair, he was also protected by the members of Harlem CORE in their office during the 2964 Harlem riots. As the executive director of the Lawyers' Constitutional Defense Committee, he played a pivotal role in convincing hundreds of civil rights lawyers to volunteer their services to the movement in the South during 1964.
