Walter Augustus Bowe, Robert Steele Collier, and Khaleel Sultarn Sayyed, Defendants-appellants, 360 F.2d 1 (2d Cir. 1966)). What is significant about the appeal is that the lawyers for the defendants stated they had witnesses who could testify that Wood had also approached them in an attempt to work with him to bomb the Statue of Liberty in 1964. Two of these witnesses identified themselves as members of the Congress of Racial Equality. These statements confirm what other CORE members have said in oral histories as discussed in the "Incognegro" articles, specifically Rafael Martinez of Bronx CORE and Stuart Wechsler of East River CORE. These statements also contradict what Ray Wood is reported to have said in the book "The Ray Wood Story" by Reggie Wood. On page 48, Ray Wood claimed his BOSSI/NYPD handlers ordered him to try and convince Collier, Bowe and Sayyed to blow up the Statue of Liberty at a meeting on Jan. 19, 1965. The statements of these CORE members not only confirm the claims of entrapment by Bowe and Sayyed but also speaks to the several inconsistencies in "The Ray Wood Story". Several questions should be asked. Did the idea to blow up the Statue of Liberty actually come from Wood's handlers or Wood himself? Was Wood telling the truth about the Jan. 19, 1965 meeting? If Wood was lying about this event is it possible he lied about other details in his confession which represents the crux of "The Ray Wood Story"? It should also be noted that Wood's daughter has openly questioned the legitimacy of Wood's confession. From the court document: "Collier did not testify in his own behalf, but his attorney offered to put witnesses on the stand who, he asserted, were prepared to testify that during the spring and summer of 1964, Wood had urged them to participate in certain violent action in New York City, e. g., blowing up the Statue of Liberty and sewers, and stick-ups in Harlem. He argued that the testimony was crucial to the defense of entrapment in that it would impeach Wood's testimony and show his intent toward the appellants. The Government objected to the introduction of such testimony and the court sustained the objection on the ground that the slight probative value of the testimony was outweighed by its propensity to confuse the jury and unnecessarily prolong the trial by introducing collateral issues." "Appellants assign as error the trial court's refusal to permit Joseph Teahan, an eighteen-year old member of the Congress of Racial Equality, to testify that, in July, 1964 at a civil rights demonstration at Foley Square, Wood asked him to participate in a plan to blow up the Statue of Liberty. Three grounds of admissibility are advanced by the appellants." "Appellants also object to the trial court's refusal to permit Barbara Loeb to testify that in June, 1964 she saw Wood at a civil rights rally and suggested blowing up the Statue of Liberty to him, and that he inquired as to what effect that would have. It also suggests an answer to one of the great mysteries surrounding the event - the identity of the second man who was arrested at the Audubon. Wood aka Ray Woodall, was an undercover police officer for a special section of the New York City Police department called the Bureau of Special Services (BOSS) also known as the ‘Red Squad’. He not only infiltrated Bronx CORE, he attended Harlem CORE functions, dated women from the chapter and frequented East River CORE meetings. According to documents from the national CORE office, he had also been Bronx CORE’s delegate to CORE’s national convention which would gave him the opportunity to gather intelligence on CORE chapters from across the country. He was responsible for the arrest of Bronx CORE chairman Herb Callender and testified against East River CORE leader Blyden Jackson in front of the House of UnAmerican Activities Committee. He infiltrated another Black radical group and convinced members to try and blow up the Statue of Liberty. CORE members during oral histories have stated he also tried to convince them to do the same at least a year earlier as well as other illegal and violent ‘militant’ actions while a member of CORE. It is becoming clearer that Wood used CORE as a way to gain entrance to the activist community in NYC especially in Harlem. It appears that once he joined CORE, he began to spread out to different Black radical groups in the city. He went on to infiltrate the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM) and provided testimony against the Black Panther Party for the trial of the Panther 21. According to one source, he even hung around Mosque #7 while Malcolm X was the minister there, usually standing in the back, asking questions. The article was written by Garrett Felber, who worked on Prof. Manning Marable’s Malcolm X Project as a graduate student. He raises an important question: What would Ray Wood have been doing at the Audubon given that the Statue of Liberty case had been reported in newspapers only days before Malcolm’s assassination? His cover was already blown. It is important to note that he is identified as ‘Ray Woods’ and not Ray Woodall, which could mean that if it was him that was seen at the Audubon, he was identified by his real name and not his alias as an undercover police agent. The article questions whether whoever stated to Kochiyama they saw Ray Wood at the Audubon could have been mistaken. It does not take into account that Kochiyama had been a member of CORE. There were also other members of CORE who were at the Audubon that day. The article also does not take into account that several other members of CORE were also members of the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) or that other CORE members had originally come out of Mosque #7. Ray Wood would have been known in the NYC activist community, especially after a photograph of him being arrested with Herb Callender a year earlier appeared in a New York Times article. There is good reason to believe Ray Wood would have been recognized if CORE and OAAU members saw him at the Audubon. This revelation of Wood being at the Audubon is a bombshell in that if this article is true it again suggests police involvement in the assassination of Malcolm X, something which has been much speculated on. In the 1973 novel originally published by Third Press, a black Vietnam Vet organizes other such vets into an underground revolutionary group in Harlem to assassinate a group of southern White democrats meeting in NYC. The action is planned on behalf of the movement to free Black people from the last links, chains of slavery and segregation. It is portrayed as one of 'cleansing violence' that would hopefully free the collective unconscious of Black people from generations of self hate. A former marine and one of the most militant NYC CORE leaders during the 1960’s, Jackson brought a wealth of real life experience to the work. While clearly in the genre of revenge fantasy like ‘The Spook Who Sat by the Door’, it would be interesting to know just exactly where and how ‘art imitated life’. Its also interesting to note one of Jackson’s sons was named after the main character. Aaron Middlepoet Jackson is also a writer and a former poet laureate of Jersey City, New Jersey. Also included are two book reviews, one from the New York Times and the Nation. The novel was surprisingly well received and Jackson was seen as a potentially successful writer ‘with chops’.
