Title A name given to the resource photo of Terry Perlman, East River CORE Description An account of the resource This is a photo of East River CORE member Terry Perlman taken by legendary Civil Rights photographer Bob Adelman. Even though it looks as if it were taken at a sit-in protest, according to Perlman, it was actually a staged photo. After being in the Freedom Rides, she became chairman of CCNY CORE, the City College (at the City University of New York) CORE chapter, for the first half of 1962. She was also one of the infamous 'River Rats', a founding member of East River CORE. My thanks to Sheila Michaels who first identified Terry Perlman in this photo for me. Along with her husband, Paul Feldman (who was arrested at the Triborough Bridge demonstration in 1964), she was one of the Harlem CORE members who broke away to start East River CORE in 1964. Born Sandra Abramowitz in Coney Island, she was a very active CORE member in NYC and also participated in the Route 40 campaign. She passed in 2005. Title A name given to the resource photo of East River CORE member Sandy Feldman with Albert Shanker, head of the United Federation of Teachers. Description An account of the resource This is a photo of East River CORE member Sandy Feldman with Albert Shanker, head of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT). The photo illustrates one of the stranger aspects of the history of Harlem CORE and the history of CORE in New York City. In the middle of the many fights CORE had with the UFT in its battles over Blacks and Latinos on the public school system was this relationship in which Shanker was the mentor of Feldman. A grammar school teacher, Feldman was also Shanker's right hand in the UFT during the mid-late 1960's. Amazingly, she was caught in the middle of the Ocean Hill-Brownsville demonstrations as a UFT liaison and walked away with the respect of both sides of the conflict. Even Sonny Carson, chairman of Brooklyn CORE, spoke of her in favorable terms in his autobiography. She not only went on to succeed Shanker as president of the UFT in 1985, she also became president of the larger national union, the American Federation of Teachers in 1997. As head of the UFT, she would go on to play a significant role in the election of NYC's first Black mayor, David Dinkins in 1989. From the New York Tines obituary: "She put the power of the United Federation of Teachers, the New York local, with 110,000 members at the time, behind the election of David N. Dinkins as mayor in 1989, an effort that helped him garner white votes. Title A name given to the resource photo of Penn Kimble, East River CORE Description An account of the resource This is a photo of East River CORE member Penn Kemble taken during the mid to late 1980's. He was one of the Harlem CORE members who broke away to help start East River CORE. At 23 years old, he was also one of the East River CORE members who was part of the 1964 Triborough Bridge demonstration. A former young socialist, he stayed a life long political activist working mostly within the Democratic Party. According to his obituary in t he Washington Post, "Mr. Kemble served as executive director of the group from 1972 to 1976, when he joined the New York senatorial campaign of Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He was Moynihan's special assistant and speechwriter until 1979." He also served as director of the U.S. Information Agency under President Clinton in 1999. In the photo, Kemble is speaking on behalf of the organization he helped start, the Coalition for a Democratic Majority. Penn Kemble passed in 2005. Title A name given to the resource articles by Marlene Nadle, East River CORE Description An account of the resource These are newspaper articles by East River CORE member Marlene Nadle. Originally a school teacher from Buffalo, Nadle was also one of the New York CORE members who left to start East River CORE. A regular columnist for the Village Voice at the time, she has written what are considered two seminal articles on the movement, pieces that are often reprinted. "View from the Back of the Bus" (nadle_mow.pdf), is a piece on traveling on a CORE bus to the March on Washington and features a young Omar Abu Ahmed. "Malcolm X: The Complexity of a Man in the Jungle," (nadle_malcolmx1.pdf) contains an interview she did with Malcolm at the Teresa Hotel. I have also included one other article she did on Malcolm X, "Burying Malcolm X" (nadle_malcolmx2.pdf) and a piece she did on East River CORE. Her ability to gain access to Malcolm X had nothing to do with being a member of CORE. It was a Village Voice assignment. Title A name given to the resource photo of Omar Abu Ahmed, East River CORE Description An account of the resource This is a 1968 photo of East River CORE's last chairman Omar Abu Ahmed (right, bald head) standing next to SNCC chairman H. Rap Brown (left, sunglasses). As an active member of Harlem CORE, Ahmed attended the March on Washington. He was one of the members who left to start East River CORE. He was also a principal organizer for the National Black Power Conference held in Newark, New Jersey, 1967, the second of such Black Power conferences. A member of Malcolm X's Organization of Afro American Unity (OAAU), he was sometimes reffered to in the press as a bodyguard and lieutenant for Malcolm X, He was in the audience of the Audubon Ballroom when Malcolm X was assassinated on Feb. 21, 1965. Mr. Ahmed passed in 2009. Title A name given to the resource photo of Karin Berg, East River CORE Description An account of the resource This is a photo of East River CORE member Karin Berg. In 1963, when Harlem CORE member Blyden Jackson lost to Marshall England in the election for Harlem CORE chairman, he and other Harlem CORE members split and formed their own CORE chapter, East River CORE. Karin Berg was one of those members. Nicknamed the 'River Rats', they were well known for their militant protest tactics. Berg had previously served as the secretary for Harlem CORE and had participated in the Route 40 Freedom Rides. By 1965 she was working at the national office. This photo comes from the autobiography of Black actor Robert Guillaume (of the TV show "Benson") with whom Berg was very close. She eventually became a music industry executive as an A+R. She went as far as becoming a vice president for Warner Records. Title A name given to the resource testimony against East River CORE chairman Blyden Jackson by Ray Wood and photo of Jackson at Communist March Description An account of the resource In 1967, undercover police officer Ray Wood (aka Ray Woodall) testified during congressional hearings before the Committee on Un-American Activities. As part of an investigation into 'subversive influences in riots, looting and burning', he gave testimony against East River CORE chairman Blyden Jackson as being a communist. Jackson had always been an admitted socialist but sources close to him also state he may have actually been a communist. As proof, they point to the fact he was the campaign manager for Herbert Aptheker when he ran for Congress in 1966. Aptheker was a well known intellectual and member of the Communist Party. Wood's testimony confirms he was spying on members of East River CORE. He had original infiltrated CORE as a member of Bronx CORE, Wood's testimony can be seen by clicking on the links below. The photo was part of the evidence given against Jackson during the hearings. The arrow points to him walking in a demonstration march with members of the Communist Party.
