Title A name given to the resource photo of UFT President Al Shanker with Bayard Rustin Description An account of the resource This is a photo of Al Shanker (White, glasses, coat and tie, center bottom, hand raised) with Bayard Rustin (Black, center bottom). The photo speaks to not just his role as the president of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) but the fact that Shanker had a history with CORE, despite his role in the Ocean Hill-Brownsville controversy, his racist actions during the 1968 teachers' strikes and his public feuds with several CORE chapters, most especially Brooklyn CORE, Harlem CORE and Queens CORE. According to the UFT's website and his biographer, Richard D. Kahlenberg, Shanker was once a member of CORE. He was a member of his college chapter at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Shanker was also personally involved in CORE's Woolworth's protests and CORE's efforts during the Mississippi Freedom Summer and its predecessor, Queens College CORE's Student Help Project especially in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He also worked with former CORE members Velma Hill, Alan Gartner, Connie Banks and Hamilton Banks to bring para-professionals into the UFT. While Gartner described Shanker's actions during the 1968 teacher's strikes as 'fucking racist', he and Hill acknowledged that Shanker also sought to increase the number of Blacks and Latinos in the UFT which at the time was overwhelmingly White and Jewish. Title A name given to the resource Photo of David Gilbert, Columbia University CORE Subject The topic of the resource Columbia University CORE members Description An account of the resource This is a photo of Columbia University CORE member David Gilbert (center, on the microphone). In the photo he is shown helping to lead the student rebellion that seized the campus of Columbia University in 1968. At the time, he was as a leader of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). He was among the SDS members that branched out to form the Weathermen which became the Weather Underground. He went underground when the group began a series of bombings to protest against the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. When he did resurface, it as was part of the 1981 Brink’s Robbery. The action was done in conjunction with former members of the Black Panther Party who had also gone underground to form the Black Liberation Army. During the action two police officers and a security guard were killed. Although he was not involved in the shooting and was to only drive the getaway car, Gilbert was sentenced to life and is still currently serving time. He was represented at his trial by Lynne Stewart, wife of Harlem CORE's Ralph Poynter. He also references other CORE demonstrations. This was discovered by chance on youtube.com so unfortunately I can provide no specific information as to the where or when the speech was given. The speech is interesting in that speaks to the fact that Malcolm X was paying very close attention to CORE and its many demonstrations. He speaks in detail about CORE demonstrations in both Brooklyn and the Bronx. Many CORE members, both Black and White, have told me about times where he was either seen at their demonstrations or they came into direct contact with him in way or another. He was clearly studying CORE in NYC. The speech is also interesting for his criticisms concerning 'the Jews', the liberal Jews in NYC and in particular, the Jews in CORE. Jewish members made up the majority of Whites in many of the NYC chapters, especially the college chapters. The rent strike movement, in particular, was initiated by NYU CORE, a chapter led by and almost completely made up of Jewish members. Title A name given to the resource photo of Barbara Pliskow, Downtown CORE Subject The topic of the resource Downtown CORE Description An account of the resource This is a 1971 photo of Downtown CORE member Barbara Pliskow (dark hair, in handcuffs). In the photo she has been arrested for trying to hijack an airplane at a Detroit airport. The action was done in order to free two members of the Black Panther Party (BPP) who had been arrested for separate crimes. Pliskow was originally from Michigan. She was a psychiatrist, according the New York Times, and working in a school before she joined Downtown CORE. Arrested at the Rutgers Houses demonstration during the summer of 1963 city wide campaign against the construction industry. She spent 5 days in jail at the women’s House of Detention. She was 29 at the time. The case was taken all the way to the Supreme Court but was refused. On Sept. 24, 1971, Pliskow, in her attempt to escape arrest after her attempt to hijack the plane was discovered, threw dynamite at the officers and pulled a gun while screaming ‘We’ll all die!”. A note in her hand bag indicated her plan was to threaten to blow the plane up unless two specific members of the BPP were freed from a local jail. The action was taken on behalf of the Black Liberation Army, the underground military aspect of the BPP. Pliskow was identified in news reports as a member of the White Panther Party, a support group for the Black Panthers made up of White members. It was also reported she had previously worked as psychology instructor at Wayne State University and the daughter of a well known criminal attorney in Detroit. He was part of the original group that seceded from Queens CORE to South Jamaica CORE. He originally joined Queens CORE at the chapter’s 1963 White Castle demonstrations in Hollis. Only 14 years old at the time, he was also a member of Queens SCORE. One of the many high school students arrested at the World’s Fair, he was part of the group at the U.S. pavilion that shouted down President Johnson while he was speaking. All were part of a social circle of high school students, almost all ‘red diaper babies’, that came from Walden, New Lincoln and Elizabeth Irwin (EI) high schools. While Opatoshu ‘wore the CORE button’ and had participated in the 1960 Woolworth’s campaign, he and the other two are examples of the many students who demonstrated at the World’s Fair but were not members of CORE.
