Even though it looks as if it were taken at a sit-in protest, according to Perlman, it was actually a staged photo. After being in the Freedom Rides, she became chairman of CCNY CORE, the City College (at the City University of New York) CORE chapter, for the first half of 1962. She was also one of the infamous 'River Rats', a founding member of East River CORE. My thanks to Sheila Michaels who first identified Terry Perlman in this photo for me.
