              <text>This is a copy of a 1947 CORE letter sent out to staff. It is included here because it demonstrates:&#13;
1. That CORE was headquartered in New York City and had an office in Harlem as early as 1947. CORE moved to NYC because its first national leader, George Houser, moved here in 1946.&#13;
2. Bayard Rustin was an early staff member of CORE. &#13;
3. There were Asian activists in CORE and in the civil rights movement. A 'Shirley Kajikawa' is listed as a member of the Executive Commitee. A woman named Ina Sugihara, who was a survivor of the Japanese internment camps here in the United States, was also a member of New York CORE at this time.&#13;
4. CORE had a history of having women leaders at the national level. Almost Half of the national officers listed&#13;
alongside George Houser and Bayard Rustin are women.</text>
