Leed's parents were from Grenada. He spent 3 1/2 years in the Army and was a decorated WWII veteran. He was also an early member of the Negro History Association. He was working with the Communist Party in Harlem as early as 18. He was elected chairman of Brooklyn CORE despite his suggesting it might be something held against the chapter. He is recognized as one of the most respected CORE leaders in New York. A veteran of many CORE campaigns in NYC, he also participated in the Route 40 Freedom Rides. He stayed in CORE as it went Black Power and eventually became a member of the National Action Council. He was married to Brooklyn CORE member Marjorie Leeds (White).
