Title A name given to the resource photo of Mike Flug, Columbia CORE, leading demonstration Description An account of the resource This is a1964 photo of Columbia CORE's Mike Flug (center, on stage, in overcoat) leading a demonstration to support the right of cafeteria workers at Columbia to unionize. He was married to chapter chairman Jemera Rone Flug at the time. Flug, who was Jewish and originally from NYC, had been in CORE since 1960. He worked in Mississippi and later Maryland with black women low-wage workers to establish the first chapter of the Maryland Freedom Union in 1966. His article, “Organized Labor and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s: The Case of the Maryland Freedom Union,” is often cited by civil rights scholars. He later became a senior archivist for the Chicago Public Library.
