Tom is the son of Leo Hurwitz, who, like the Gilfords of 7 Arts CORE, was blacklisted for his political activities.

Having participated in CORE campaigns as early as the 1960 Woolworth's demonstrations on 125th street, Tom was also at the 1964 World’s Fair demonstration. He was arrested at the New York pavillion with fellow Elizabeth Irwin high school student Lisa Lee Gilford.

Tom went on to join the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and was a leader in the 1968 student takeover of Columbia University. He has since become a highly respected cinematographer. At least four of the films he's worked on have won Academy awards.
