Rustin was one of the earliest members of CORE and its first field secretary. Much of the staff for the MOW working in its Harlem office were CORE members: Norm and Velma Hill, Tom Kahn, Rachelle Horowitz, Penn Kemble, Sandy Feldman, Blyden Jackson, Eleanor Holmes (Norton), Elliot Linzer. Most of these people were also socialists and members of the Socialist Party of America.

Thanks to Monte Wasch, who worked on the MOW with Rustin and Sy Posner, for the photo. Both Wasch and Posner were part of Bronx CORE's White Castle demonstrations. Posner is the 'pudgy white guy' standing to the right of Rustin.</text>

<text>This is an audio file of Malcolm X speaking about Bronx CORE’s demonstrations against the White Castle restaurant on Boston Road and Allerton avenue in July of 1963. He also references other CORE demonstrations. This was discovered by chance on youtube.com so unfortunately I can provide no specific information as to the where or when the speech was given.

The speech is interesting in that speaks to the fact that Malcolm X was paying very close attention to CORE and its many demonstrations. He speaks in detail about CORE demonstrations in both Brooklyn and the Bronx. Many CORE members, both Black and White, have told me about times where he was either seen at their demonstrations or they came into direct contact with him in way or another. He was clearly studying CORE in NYC.

The speech is also interesting for his criticisms concerning 'the Jews', the liberal Jews in NYC and in particular, the Jews in CORE. Jewish members made up the majority of Whites in many of the NYC chapters, especially the college chapters. The rent strike movement, in particular, was initiated by NYU CORE, a chapter led by and almost completely made up of Jewish members.</text>

<text> This is one of the cover illustrations for Operation Burning Candle, a novel written by East River CORE member Blyden Jackson.

In the 1973 novel originally published by Third Press, a black Vietnam Vet organizes other such vets into an underground revolutionary group in Harlem to assassinate a group of southern White democrats meeting in NYC. The action is planned on behalf of the movement to free Black people from the last links, chains of slavery and segregation. It is portrayed as one of 'cleansing violence' that would hopefully free the collective unconscious of Black people from generations of self hate.

A former marine and one of the most militant NYC CORE leaders during the 1960’s, Jackson brought a wealth of real life experience to the work. While clearly in the genre of revenge fantasy like ‘The Spook Who Sat by the Door’, it would be interesting to know just exactly where and how ‘art imitated life’. Its also interesting to note one of Jackson’s sons was named after the main character. Aaron Middlepoet Jackson is also a writer and a former poet laureate of Jersey City, New Jersey.

Also included are two book reviews, one from the New York Times and the Nation. The novel was surprisingly well received and Jackson was seen as a potentially successful writer ‘with chops’.

<text> This is a 1971 photo of Downtown CORE member Barbara Pliskow (dark hair, in handcuffs). In the photo she has been arrested for trying to hijack an airplane at a Detroit airport. The action was done in order to free two members of the Black Panther Party (BPP) who had been arrested for separate crimes.

Pliskow was originally from Michigan. She was a psychiatrist, according the New York Times, and working in a school before she joined Downtown CORE.

Arrested at the Rutgers Houses demonstration during the summer of 1963 city wide campaign against the construction industry. She spent 5 days in jail at the women’s House of Detention. She was 29 at the time. The case was taken all the way to the Supreme Court but was refused.

On Sept. 24, 1971, Pliskow, in her attempt to escape arrest after her attempt to hijack the plane was discovered, threw dynamite at the officers and pulled a gun while screaming ‘We’ll all die!”. A note in her hand bag indicated her plan was to threaten to blow the plane up unless two specific members of the BPP were freed from a local jail. The action was taken on behalf of the Black Liberation Army, the underground military aspect of the BPP. Pliskow was identified in news reports as a member of the White Panther Party, a support group for the Black Panthers made up of White members. It was also reported she had previously worked as psychology instructor at Wayne State University and the daughter of a well known criminal attorney in Detroit.

<text>This is a photo of Chris Sprowal on the cover of the November 1986 issue of the news magazine, City Limits. By the early 1980’s, a failed marriage ultimately led him to return to Philadelphia, drug addiction and homelessness.

Rather than stay down and out, he began to organize among the homeless in Philadelphia. He was one of the founders of the Committee for Dignity and Fairness for the Homeless. This led to the creation of the Dignity Shelter, the only shelter in the country founded and run by homeless people. MTV in connection with Bruce Springsteen held a 24 hour telethon on MTV in 1986 to help raise funds for Sprowal’s organizations.

Sprowal’s was also one of the founding members and president of the National Union for the Homeless, one of the largest advocacy groups for the homeless in the country. At a time when the the issue of homelessness had taken on epic proportions, Sprowal was seen as a national spokesman and tireless activist on behalf of the homeless. He was cfrequently featured in the news perhaps more so that when he was a member of CORE.

By the 1990’s, Sprowal eventually drifted in and out of drug addiction again to the extent that he was removed from the Dignity organizations he founded and helped lead. Regardless, it is clear that his time in CORE had a transformative effect on his life and that his career in politics and as an activist is an evolution of his experience in CORE. To use an idea borrowed from Dr. Nishani Frazier, his history should be seen as an example of the transformative nature of CORE.

<text>This is an early 1970’s photo of Downtown CORE member Chris Sprowal. His personal story speaks to what Dr. Nishani Frazier identifies as the transformative nature of CORE.

Originally from Philadelphia, Sprowal had been locked up on several different occasions before coming into Downtown CORE, including three different times for narcotics. In speaking about those years as an addict, he stated, ‘I wasted more of my life in a jail cell where I broke the habit cold turkey. One day I walked off Riker’s Island and got hooked on CORE’.

Sprowal was one of the CORE leaders that led a protest demonstration of students the day after the NYPD shooting of a Black teenager that led to the Harlem riots. Sprowal was reported by the NY Times as having ’cautioned the demonstrators to behave like ladies and gentleman’. The chanting of the 175 students, mostly schoolmates of the student that was killed, ranged from ‘We Shall Overcome’ to chants of ‘Kill a Cop! Let’s Go!’. Sprowal and other CORE leaders present called for murder charges to be placed on the police officer responsible.

Sprowal was also one of the leaders of the rally that preceded the actual riot in Harlem that became the start of the ‘long hot summers’. Sprowal was again quoted by the New York Times at the rally as saying, “It is time to let ‘the man’ know that if he does something to us we are going to do something back…. I belong to a non-violent organization, but I’m not non-violent. When a cop shoots me, I will shoot him back.”

Soon afterwards, Sprowal became a member of CORE’s ruling body, the National Action Council (NAC).

By 1970, Sprowal had moved to Freeeport , Long Island and became involved in politics. He was considered one of Nassau County’s leading Black democrats, and the head of a Black caucus within the Nassau County Democratic party. He started a Black Power group in 1972 , the Political Organization and Workshop for Education and Registration (POWER). Married with kids, he went on to earn a college degree from the State University of New York. At one point, he owned his own home.

The Tony award wining actor went on to appear in such films as 'Serpico' and various television shows.
