Title A name given to the resource photo of Bayard Rustin and Herb Callender, Bronx CORE chairman Description An account of the resource This is a still image of Bayard Rustin (Black male at microphone) and Bronx CORE chairman Herb Callender (Black male right, dark overcoat). The photo speaks again to the complicated relationship between Rustin and CORE. He is not on staff or a member of any chapter. At this point, according to Norm and Velma Hill, if he was a member of any group it would have been the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). However, he is enough of a presence in CORE that James Farmer believed Rustin was trying to instigate a coup to oust him as the head of CORE. Rustin worked close with CORE in New York City (where he lived) throughout the first half of the 1960’s. They worked together on many demonstrations against the Board of Education including the 1964 Citywide School Boycott. Rustin was also a lead organizer for CORE’s 1964 World’s Fair demonstration. His right hand people from the March on Washington, Norm and Velma Hill, Tom Kahn and Rachelle Horowitz, were also leaders in CORE both nationally and locally. Although A. Phillip Randolph was the initiator and head of the MOW, it was Rustin as the deputy director who was recognized as the main organizer for the march. Rustin was one of the earliest members of CORE and its first field secretary. Much of the staff for the MOW working in its Harlem office were CORE members: Norm and Velma Hill, Tom Kahn, Rachelle Horowitz, Penn Kemble, Sandy Feldman, Blyden Jackson, Eleanor Holmes (Norton), Elliot Linzer. Most of these people were also socialists and members of the Socialist Party of America. Thanks to Monte Wasch, who worked on the MOW with Rustin and Sy Posner, for the photo. Both Wasch and Posner were part of Bronx CORE's White Castle demonstrations. Posner is the 'pudgy white guy' standing to the right of Rustin. She is shown here in Mississippi working in the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) office for the Freedom Summer Project of 1964. An active member of Downtown CORE, she joined after news reports of the Birmingham bombing at the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing. She demonstrated at the World's Fair and worked with Micky Schwerner in tenant organizing on the Lower East Side. She arrived in Mississippi a day before Chaney, Goodwin and Schwerner went missing. She also worked with students in Queens College CORE while teaching there during the early-mid 1960's. Her brother, Larry Gale, was a member of Staten Island CORE. Her husband, Paul Chevigny, a well known lawyer for the New York Civil Liberties Union at the time, also worked with her in Mississippi and briefly as a lawyer for CORE in New York City. Now Prof. Bell Gale Chevigny, she has since become the professor emeritus of literature at Purchase College, SUNY. She is also the editor of the 'Doing Time: 25 Years of Prison Writing'. Known as Betsy, she was fined $200, sentenced to two months and served time in Parchman prison after being arrested in Jackson, Mississippi and convicted for ‘breach of the peace'. Her arrest was used as a test case when she argued that the Mississippi authorities were 'using the breach of peace statute unlawfully to enforce segregation.’ * Her case openly challenged whether the Freedom Riders should be arrested at all. In response, the presiding judge stated Wyckoff ‘was not convicted of a violation of any law with reference to integration or segregation…’. * Defended by William Kuntsler, her case went all the way to the Supreme Court, but lost. Originally a member of New York CORE when it was still in midtown, she stayed with the chapter when it moved to 125th street in Harlem and worked in its office. She also walked the picket line during the campaign against Woolworth's. She transferred over to Downtown CORE when it started up because she was already living in the area. The future Dr. Elizabeth Wyckoff, PhD, was at the time a senior at Bryn Mawr college where she graduated magna cum laude. The daughter of Dr. John H. Wyckoff, a prominent cardiologist and dean of the NYU and Bellevue Medical College, she majored in ancient classics with a distinction in Greek. While at Bryn Mawr, she won several of the college's top scholarships and also studied at Newnham college, part of the university of Cambridge in England. As a professor and scholar in her field, she taught Greek at Mount Holyoke college. According to her application for the Freedom Rides, she also taught at Bryn Mawr, Wells and Vassar.
