It is taken from the film, "Coonskin" (aka "Street Fight"). An Obie award winning actor, Gordone was also the first Black to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama with his play, "No Place to be Somebody". As a founder of the Committee for the Employment of Negro Performers, he worked with CORE to fight discrimination in the hiring of Blacks on Broadway. Title A name given to the resource film clip of Charles Gordone in "Coonskin" Description An account of the resource This is a film clip of 7 Arts CORE member Charles Gordone acting in Ralph Bakshi's 1975 film, "Coonskin". He starred in this film and appeared in another of Bakshi's film, "Heavy Traffic". CORE and Rev. Al Sharpton demonstrated against the film when it first appeared as part of CORE' campaign against negative stereotyping of Blacks in films. Ironically, Gordone had once been an active member of CORE who led demonstrations against the discriminatory hiring of Blacks in the performing arts that eventually did lead to changes within Hollywood and Broadway. Bakshi always said the movie was in itself a protest of the racism in Hollywood. A subversive parody of films like Disney's "Song of the South". The main character was supposedly based on Malcolm X. Because of the demonstrations against the film, it received only limited distribution and stopped showing soon after its release. Bakshi still blames CORE and Al Sharpton for it being shut down. It has since become a hip-hop classic whose fans include director Spike Lee. Title A name given to the resource photo of Penn Kimble, East River CORE Description An account of the resource This is a photo of East River CORE member Penn Kemble taken during the mid to late 1980's. He was one of the Harlem CORE members who broke away to help start East River CORE. At 23 years old, he was also one of the East River CORE members who was part of the 1964 Triborough Bridge demonstration. A former young socialist, he stayed a life long political activist working mostly within the Democratic Party. According to his obituary in t he Washington Post, "Mr. Kemble served as executive director of the group from 1972 to 1976, when he joined the New York senatorial campaign of Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He was Moynihan's special assistant and speechwriter until 1979." He also served as director of the U.S. Information Agency under President Clinton in 1999. In the photo, Kemble is speaking on behalf of the organization he helped start, the Coalition for a Democratic Majority. Penn Kemble passed in 2005. Brooklyn CORE initiated this demonstration as part of a city wide CORE campaign protesting the lack of Blacks and Latinos in the construction industry. Bramletter was arrested as part of a group trying to block a cement truck from entering the construction site. Title A name given to the resource Arnie Goldwag, Brooklyn CORE, on Jitu Weusi Description An account of the resource This is an audio clip of Brooklyn CORE member Arnie Goldwag speaking about working with Brooklyn CORE's Jitu Weusi after Goldwag had been pushed out of Brooklyn CORE because he was White. In his oral history with New York CORE member Sheila Michaels tells a story of how, working as an investigator for the Administration for Children’s Services, he risked his job by insisting on placing a young girl who had to be taken out of an abusive home into the care of Weusi. Rather than place the girl in the foster care/group home system, he believed Weusi could do the job through the EAST, the Black educational and cultural center Weusi helped found in the 1970's. What is interesting is that this was done after Weusi had been labeled as anti-semitic for his various actions during the Ocean-Hill Brownsville demonstrations over community control of local public schools. Goldwag, the brother of an orthodox rabbi, had been pushed out of Brooklyn CORE as it went Black Power, a move for which he blamed Sonny Carson, a man who he had no kind words for. Even with that, his interview indicates his ability to be critical and distinguish between Carson and Weusi, a characteristic the White members of CORE were not often given credit for.
