Gore, like Bayard Rustin and George Houser, was a pacifist who originally came from the Fellowship of Reconciliation. He served as associate community relations director under Marv Rich in 1962 and later as assistant director of the organization department under Gordon Carey. He participated in the Route 40 Freedom Rides. He was arrested at Downtown CORE's demonstration at Rutgers Houses in the summer of 1963. According to Mark Levy of COFO (Council of Federated Offices), "National CORE, in early 1964, had sent New Yorker Mickey Schwerner (with his wife Rita) to head up the CORE organizing project in Mississippi in the District 4 area assigned to them by COFO. When Schwerner was killed by the Klan at the start of the summer, Gore was sent to Meridian, MS, to serve as interim-head of the Freedom Summer project in that area." Gore later moved to Africa where he lived until he died. Title A name given to the resource photo of Bronx CORE chairman Herb Callender Subject The topic of the resource Bronx CORE members Description An account of the resource This is a 1964 photo of Bronx CORE chairman Herb Callender. A union leader in a Ford auto plant, he was one of the original 1961 Freedom Riders. The case that resulted from his particpation, Herbert E. Callender v. Florida, went all the way to the Supreme Court. He was successfully defended by CORE attorneys Carl Rachlin and Floyd McKissick. He is recognized as the leader who put Bronx CORE on the map with the 1963 White Castle demonstrations, a campaign that exposed the existence of southern style violence and neo-nazi members in NYC. Along with Malcolm X and rent strike leader Jesse Gray, he was denounced in the press by Police Commissioner Murphy. It later came out that Callender had been targeted by the Bureau of Special Services (BOSS/NYPD) who had planted an undercover police agent, Ray Wood, in his chapter. After placing the Mayor Wagner of New York City under citizen's arrest with Wood, Callender was briefly sentenced to Bellevue for mental observation. Unperturbed, he became one of the three leaders of the 1964 Stall In campaign. He eventually became a field secretary and then the national organization director for CORE, the third highest ranking position at the time. He left just before Roy Innis became the national director but was part of the unsuccessful effort in the mid-1970's along with James Farmer to take CORE back from Innis. In between he received a degree from Cornell University. Callender later changed his name to Makaza Kumanyika which according to his son means "a cold wind blows for Black people." The two had attempted to make a citizen's arrest on Mayor Wagner. Wood is the Black male with sunglasses and a light suit in the center of the photo. Callender is the Black male on the left wearing the dark suit. Wood is identified in the article as 'Ray Woodall'. Inside the restaurant are White counter protesters clearly holding the Confederate flag. Also known as a 'rebel flag', it was the flag of southern secessionists during the Civil War which resulted in the end of slavery. Like the Nazi's use of the swastika symbol, it is often used as a white supremacist symbol. Bronx CORE's White Castle demonstration was accompanied by armed violence from such groups as the American Nazi Party.
