It is included here because it demonstrates: 1. That CORE was headquartered in New York City and had an office in Harlem as early as 1947. CORE moved to NYC because its first national leader, George Houser, moved here in 1946. 2. Bayard Rustin was an early staff member of CORE. 3. There were Asian activists in CORE and in the civil rights movement. A 'Shirley Kajikawa' is listed as a member of the Executive Commitee. A woman named Ina Sugihara, who was a survivor of the Japanese internment camps here in the United States, was also a member of New York CORE at this time. 4. CORE had a history of having women leaders at the national level. Almost Half of the national officers listed alongside George Houser and Bayard Rustin are women. It was taken at that summer's 'Fast for Freedom' at the Statue of Liberty in support of the Woolworth demonstrations. Harrington started out as the New York CORE chairman when the chapter was still in midtown Manhattan. She remained chairman after the chapter moved uptown to Harlem. British born Kirchner was the housing committee chairman of Brooklyn CORE before eventually becoming vice chairman. The Black male at the end is at this time. At the time, she was only 19 years old. She first joined CORE to be a Freedom Rider and signed up at the national office. She would go on to become the chairman of CCNY CORE, a member of Harlem CORE and a founding member of East River CORE. This photo (as almost all of the other Freedom Rider arrest photos on this site) comes from Eric Etheridge's book, "Breach of Peace". In the book, her name is misspelled as 'Terl Perlman'.
