Born and raised in Brooklyn, he was originally known as Leslie Campbell. He was a member of Brooklyn CORE from its earliest days, partially due to his father's friendship with chairman Ollie Leeds, both of whom were Marxists. After attending Long Island University on a basketball scholarship, he became a teacher in Brooklyn's junior high schools. Upset over the United Federation of Teachers' (UFT) decision not to support the 1964 Citywide School Boycott, he and other Black teachers (including now city councilman Al Vann) formed the Negro Teachers Association. Renamed the African American Teachers Association, the organization played a leading role in the Ocean Hill-Brownsville controversy of 1968. Changing his name to Jitu Weusi, he went on to become a founder and headmaster of the Uhuru Sasa School, one of the most well known of the Black Liberation schools in New York City during the 1970's. 'Uhuru Sasa' is Kiswahili for 'Freedom Now', which interestingly was a slogan heavily used by CORE during the 1960's at its demonstrations. Jitu Weusi 'also from Kiswahili' can be translated into 'Big Black' in English. Weusi and the school's parent organization, the EAST, were primarily responsible for the promotion of Kwanzaa in New York perhaps more than anyone else. She also worked on the Mississppi Freedom Project. Originally an English major at Queens College/CUNY, she went on to get a J.D. From Rutgers Univ. She is currently a principal in the law firm Skellenger Bender located in Seattle, Washington. According to her website, 'Rita is admitted to practice in the federal and state courts in Washington, as well as the United States Supreme Court and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Ninth and Third Circuits.' It should be noted that she pursued justice for her husband for more than forty years. As captured in the documentary "Neshoba", Edgar Ray Killen, a former KKK member, was finally convicted in 2005 for his role in the murders of Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney. "My husband, Michael Schwerner, did not die in vain. If he and Andrew Goodman had been Negroes, the world would have taken little notice of their deaths. After all, the slaying of a Negro in Mississippi is not news. After Brooklyn CORE created a voter registration campaign it decided to keep the momentum going by turning it into an independent political campaign. Dubbed the Brooklyn Freedom Democratic Movement, it was modeled after the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Owens was chosen as its candidate to run for city councilman. Originally from Tennessee, he got his B.A. from Morehouse College and received an M.S. degree from Atlanta University. When he came into Brooklyn CORE he was working as a librarian in the Brooklyn Public Library. He became chairman after the Stall-In in 1964. He led the chapter's rent strike campaign during which hundreds of tenants became involved. Whereas some other CORE chapters did not always consider their rent strike campaigns as successful, Brooklyn CORE did. Owens left the chapter as it turned Black power but he used his experience to become the founder and former director of a community corporation in Brooklyn, the Brownsville Community Council. Mayor Lindsay named it as “one of the most successful anti-poverty agencies in the city”. Many of the city's community corporations were being run at the time throughout the city by former CORE members. In 1968, he was named the commissioner for the Community Development Agency which was responsible for watching over all the other NYC community corporations. On Aug. 15, 1963, a group of CORE members primarily from Brooklyn CORE started from the Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and walked 230 miles to Washington, D.C., for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Aug. 28, 1963. The marchers included Sylvia Simon, Lena Crosson, Agatha Hassell, Mike Zapata, August Austin, Janet Rose, Sam Johnson, Chuck Killens, Larry Cumberbatch, Leroy Smith, Milton Saunders, Isaian Brunson, Kenneth Peterson, the Freedom Rider Jo Adler, and Tony Spencer of Harlem CORE.
