She covered the case of Ray Wood, aka 'Ray Woodall' who had successfully infiltrated both Bronx CORE and Harlem CORE. Originally a school teacher from Buffalo, Nadle was also one of the New York CORE members who left to start East River CORE. A regular columnist for the Village Voice at the time, she has written what are considered two seminal articles on the movement, pieces that are often reprinted. "View from the Back of the Bus" (nadle_mow.pdf), is a piece on traveling on a CORE bus to the March on Washington and features a young Omar Abu Ahmed. "Malcolm X: The Complexity of a Man in the Jungle," (nadle_malcolmx1.pdf) contains an interview she did with Malcolm at the Teresa Hotel. I have also included one other article she did on Malcolm X, "Burying Malcolm X" (nadle_malcolmx2.pdf) and a piece she did on East River CORE. Her ability to gain access to Malcolm X had nothing to do with being a member of CORE. It was a Village Voice assignment. Title A name given to the resource book cover and reviews for 'Operation Burning Candle' by Blyden Jackson, East River CORE Subject The topic of the resource East River CORE members Description An account of the resource This is one of the cover illustrations for Operation Burning Candle, a novel written by East River CORE member Blyden Jackson. In the 1973 novel originally published by Third Press, a black Vietnam Vet organizes other such vets into an underground revolutionary group in Harlem to assassinate a group of southern White democrats meeting in NYC. The action is planned on behalf of the movement to free Black people from the last links, chains of slavery and segregation. It is portrayed as one of 'cleansing violence' that would hopefully free the collective unconscious of Black people from generations of self hate. A former marine and one of the most militant NYC CORE leaders during the 1960’s, Jackson brought a wealth of real life experience to the work. While clearly in the genre of revenge fantasy like ‘The Spook Who Sat by the Door’, it would be interesting to know just exactly where and how ‘art imitated life’. Its also interesting to note one of Jackson’s sons was named after the main character. Aaron Middlepoet Jackson is also a writer and a former poet laureate of Jersey City, New Jersey. Also included are two book reviews, one from the New York Times and the Nation. The novel was surprisingly well received and Jackson was seen as a potentially successful writer ‘with chops’. Title A name given to the resource Brooklyn CORE member Les Campbell and the "Hey, Jew boy" poem Subject The topic of the resource Les Campbell (a.k.a Jitu Weusi) Description An account of the resource This is a film clip that it comes from the PBS documentary series "The Jewish Americans"... it has to do with Brooklyn CORE member Les Campbell from the Ocean Hill-Brownsville community control demonstrations and the "Hey, Jew boy" poem he read on the radio in 1969. He paid a heavy price as he was labeled as anti-semitic for the rest of his life even though he apologized several times. In the many articles on the issue, which often implied it was Campbell who wrote the poem, his side was rarely discussed. The poem, which the show’s host (Julius Lester of SNCC) asked Campbell to read, had actually been written by a 15 year old student. It was only one of several written by his students and read on the show. Campbell at first refused to read the poem but finally did at the host's insistence. He used the poem to illustrate the type of enmity created by the mostly Jewish United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and of how the students were pointing to the fact that these historical victims of racism were just as guilty of being racist. The poem had been dedicated to Al Shanker, head of the UFT. Even though he had participated in many civil rights demonstrations, specifically with CORE, Shankar went well out of his way to portray the Blacks and Latinos opposed to him and the UFT as Hitleresque monsters who wanted to "kill Whitey". He also warned parents that volunteers who kept the schools open while the UFT was on strike may have "transmissible diseases" stereotyping Blacks and Latinos as unwashed and dirty. As professor Clarence Taylor wrote, “Al Shanker’s attempt to play on the fears of teachers by falsely painting a picture of the whole community control movement as anti-Jewish and out to remove Jewish teachers from their position further heightened the tension and distrust between the Black and Jewish communities.’ (Taylor , Clarence. Knocking At Our Own Door. Columbia University Press.) Campbell , who changed his name to Jitu Weusi, went on to found the Black cultural nationalist organization the EAST.
