   She became a member of LI CORE during its demonstrations at Rockville Centre. At the time, she worked as a domestic servant. One out of every three Black women in Rockville Centre worked as domestic servants for nearby Whites. A member of a local tenants association, she was arrested during one of the demonstrations and became of officer of LI CORE under Mel Jackson. In the photo, she was the President of the Rockville Center Tenants Association. &#13;

                <text>   This is a 1966 photo of Suffolk County CORE chairman Henry G. Smith (Black). He is talking with Suffolk District Court Judge Floyd Sarisohn (White). The two tried to create an experimental program to help â€˜indigent defendants who are jailed because they canâ€™t afford bailâ€™. The judge stated in the press that starting the next day he would â€˜release indigent Negro and Puerto Rican defendants without bail if COREâ€™ guaranteed they would return to court. Instead, he was ordered off the bench by his superior in a move seen as unprecedented in LI history.&#13;
