In the photo he is a freshman at Dartmouth College in 1967. At Dartmouth, he became a member of SDS but lived with members of the school’s Afro-American Society. He was also arrested for sitting in at a military recruitment center in 1969. Tragically, he died from a heroin overdose in 1970. He had just turned 21. Chesson was head of the Patchogue NAACP before he came to CORE. He served as a director of and then chairman of the board at the Farm Workers Service Center, a program which provided legal and medical services to migrants in Riverhead and helped them to unionize. Standing next to him is Arthur Mitchell (right, headband), a coordinator for the Center. Mitchell was rumored to be connected to the Black Panther Party although he denied being a member. The Center, however was said to be an outpost of Black Panther Party. One of the 'old lefties' that populated the Lower East Side at the time, he had been a communist and fought in the Spanish Civil War. He eventually became an anarchist and was one of the founding members of the Libertarian League. Advocating "equal freedom for all in a free socialist society", the League led picket lines during CORE's campaign against Woolworth's department stores. Igal Roodenko and Murray Bookchin of Downtown CORE were also members. Betsy Wyckoff, the freedom rider, was his long time companion. My thanks to Judy Bundy for bringing him to my attention. Title A name given to the resource photo of Betsy Wyckoff as Freedom Rider Subject The topic of the resource Downtown CORE members Description An account of the resource This is a 1961 photo of Dr. Elizabeth Wyckoff as a Freedom Rider. Known as Betsy, she was fined $200, sentenced to two months and served time in Parchman prison after being arrested in Jackson, Mississippi and convicted for ‘breach of the peace'. Her arrest was used as a test case when she argued that the Mississippi authorities were 'using the breach of peace statute unlawfully to enforce segregation.’ * Her case openly challenged whether the Freedom Riders should be arrested at all. In response, the presiding judge stated Wyckoff ‘was not convicted of a violation of any law with reference to integration or segregation…’. * Defended by William Kuntsler, her case went all the way to the Supreme Court, but lost. Originally a member of New York CORE when it was still in midtown, she stayed with the chapter when it moved to 125th street in Harlem and worked in its office. She also walked the picket line during the campaign against Woolworth's. She transferred over to Downtown CORE when it started up because she was already living in the area. The future Dr. Elizabeth Wyckoff, PhD, was at the time a senior at Bryn Mawr college where she graduated magna cum laude. The daughter of Dr. John H. Wyckoff, a prominent cardiologist and dean of the NYU and Bellevue Medical College, she majored in ancient classics with a distinction in Greek. While at Bryn Mawr, she won several of the college's top scholarships and also studied at Newnham college, part of the university of Cambridge in England. As a professor and scholar in her field, she taught Greek at Mount Holyoke college. According to her application for the Freedom Rides, she also taught at Bryn Mawr, Wells and Vassar. Wendell Foster and the renaming of Lenox Avenue into Malcolm X Boulevard Description An account of the resource This is a 1987 photo of Columbia CORE member Hilton Clark (sitting, Black male, dark suit, glasses) as a NYC city councilman. Sitting next to him is city councilman Rev. Wendell Foster (New York CORE) on his right and Mayor Ed Koch on his left. Koch is signing the law which renamed parts of Lenox Avenue into Malcolm X Boulevard. Next to Koch is Dr. Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X’s widow. It was Clark who was responsible for introducing the legislation for the renaming to the city council. Foster originally came out of New York CORE. When Clark returned to NYC after his time in the Army, he became worked on a campaign for Charlie Rangel and became involved in with local politics. Clark organized it the Malcolm X Club of Independent Democrats and ran with Harlem CORE’s Elaine Parker for in 1971 for district leader in the 74th assembly district, a seat formerly held by Adam Clayton Powell. They lost, but Clark eventually won in 1979 as district leader of part A of the 71st assembly district. He served as city councilman in 1989-1990. CORE, with his father, Dr. Kenneth Clark, and family Subject The topic of the resource Columbia University CORE members Description An account of the resource This is a photo of Columbia CORE member Hilton Clark (left, blue suit) with his sister and their parents, Dr. Kenneth (center) and Mamie Clark. Born and raised in Harlem, Hilton when interviewed remembered there being only 6 Blacks in his class of 400 at the time he joined Columbia CORE in the early 1960’s. He was arrested demonstrating in CORE’s campaign against the Schaffer Brewery in 1964. He also claimed membership in ACTION and participated in the John Jay cafeteria at Columbia. Hilton was also one of the founders of the Students Afro-American Society, one of the main student groups responsible for the student takeover of Columbia University in 1968. He stated in his interview that he quit Columbia by the end of 1964 to work in Mississippi with Bill Strickland of the Northern Student Movement and Fannie Lou Hamer on voter registration. Because he quit college, Hilton stated he was drafted into the Army where he worked in Intelligence. Dr. Kenneth and Mamie Clark are two of the most significant psychologists in the history of the United States. Their work on the doll test led to the success of the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. Dr. Kenneth Clark served on New York CORE’s Board of Advisers and also on the board for CORE’s Scholarship and Education Fund. He was also the first Black person to earn a PhD in psychology from Columbia University.
