He was part of the original group that seceded from Queens CORE to South Jamaica CORE.

He originally joined Queens CORE at the chapter’s 1963 White Castle demonstrations in Hollis. Only 14 years old at the time, he was also a member of Queens SCORE.

One of the many high school students arrested at the World’s Fair, he was part of the group at the U.S. pavilion that shouted down President Johnson while he was speaking.

<text>This is an audio file of Malcolm X speaking about Bronx CORE’s demonstrations against the White Castle restaurant on Boston Road and Allerton avenue in July of 1963. He also references other CORE demonstrations. This was discovered by chance on youtube.com so unfortunately I can provide no specific information as to the where or when the speech was given.

The speech is interesting in that speaks to the fact that Malcolm X was paying very close attention to CORE and its many demonstrations. He speaks in detail about CORE demonstrations in both Brooklyn and the Bronx. Many CORE members, both Black and White, have told me about times where he was either seen at their demonstrations or they came into direct contact with him in way or another. He was clearly studying CORE in NYC.

The speech is also interesting for his criticisms concerning 'the Jews', the liberal Jews in NYC and in particular, the Jews in CORE. Jewish members made up the majority of Whites in many of the NYC chapters, especially the college chapters. The rent strike movement, in particular, was initiated by NYU CORE, a chapter led by and almost completely made up of Jewish members.</text>

<text>This is the Jan. 20, 1988 New York Newsday article, 'The Minister and the Feds'. In it, Rev. Al Sharpton is reported to have secretly worked as an informant for the FBI. His targets included not just mafia figures but New York City Black leaders and activists, including former CORE member Wendell Foster and former Brooklyn CORE chairmen Sonny Carson and Congressman Major Owens.
While Sharpton is quoted as admitting he inform on Owens, he consistently denied he informed on Carson or any other Black activists.
Stories over the next few months would confirm these allegations. Kwame Brathwaite, an elder Harlem Black nationalist and ally of many in Harlem CORE, told Newsday that during the years Sharpton was working as an informant he also attempted to set up a meeting with Assata Shakur, a Black Panther who had escaped from prison and was in hiding.

An explosive story that is often cited, I included it here because it is not easy to find on Lexis-Nexis or Proquest or at NYU's library.

<text>This is the photo used for the New York Times obituary of Brooklyn CORE chairman Major Owens who died on October 21, 2013. The photo is notable because in it he is speaking at an NAACP event.

The fact that Congressman Major Owens was ever a member of CORE or that his political career started in CORE was not mentioned in either the New York Times obituary or the Washington Post's (included below). It was not even mentioned in the New York Daily News or the New York Post coverage of his passing. None of these papers even mentioned that Major Owens was at one time an activist.

Major Owens was a revolutionary. Major Owens was in the streets. As the head of Brooklyn CORE's Rent Strike Committee (a group that included former first deputy mayor Stan Brezenoff), Owens was one of the most successful practitioners of non-violent direct action in New York City. In fact, it was the members of Brooklyn CORE who first suggested and insisted that he run for political office as a city councilman in 1965.

Also not mentioned in any of the coverage was the fact he died within a day of another Brooklyn CORE comrade, Jerome Bibuld, whose family set off CORE's more than decade long struggle against the NYC Board of Education with the chapter's 1962 sit-in at the BOE's office in Brooklyn. As of the date of this posting there has been no obituary for Jerome Bibuld written in any of the major New York City newspapers.
