This is a 1968 photo of East River CORE's last chairman Omar Abu Ahmed (right, bald head) standing next to SNCC chairman H. Rap Brown (left, sunglasses).
As an active member of Harlem CORE, Ahmed attended the March on Washington. He was one of the members who left to start East River CORE. He was also a principal organizer for the National Black Power Conference held in Newark, New Jersey, 1967, the second of such Black Power conferences.
A member of Malcolm X's Organization of Afro American Unity (OAAU), he was sometimes reffered to in the press as a bodyguard and lieutenant for Malcolm X, He was in the audience of the Audubon Ballroom when Malcolm X was assassinated on Feb. 21, 1965.
Mr. Ahmed passed in 2009.
